Many people think only professionals can train dogs well.  This is due to them not knowing how to train a dog.  You need to do some research on dog training methods to make sure you are taking the right approach to your puppy training. This article is loaded with useful tips and ideas that you can incorporate into your approach to puppy training.

Ensure you get your dog’s attention using the same methods. Start each command by calling the dog’s name. Use his name to get his attention then follow up with a command. Dogs know their name and will be attentive when you speak it.

During the earliest days of puppy training, stick with simple directives. Smaller, more easily learned behaviors are more likely to produce timely successes and a solid foundation for future training efforts. This gives you greater results when training.

Dogs love leaders, as do other pack animals. Some dogs resist following their owner’s lead. In these cases, seek help from a qualified positive reinforcement trainer to help you earn your dog’s trust. Make sure your dog knows that you are the boss for a better behaved and secure dog.

Never walk your dog using a tight leash. Doing this can encourage your dog to pull inappropriately. You want to teach your dog to walk calmly, without pulling at the leash. You need to be aware of how taut your leash is. If it is too short to maintain some slack, get one that is longer.

When giving a command to your dog, you should always use the exact same kind of voice and the same volume. They will know this tone of your voice and associate it with being in trouble. This also assists the dog in understanding what the difference is between a tone for a command and the tone for discipline.

You need to keep it real about what you expect from your dog.  If a dog’s previous owner or you have allowed a dog to sleep on furniture or jump on people for many years, it will take time to change that long term behavior. It is much easier to address issues when dogs are still young.

Use consistency when you are crate training your young puppy. Always give the pup the option to go to the bathroom after leaving his crate. In time, the dog will have the ability to exercise restraint when it comes to nature’s call.

Continue training throughout the dog’s entire life to ensure positive results. A dog does not stop learning after puppyhood. By continually reinforcing desired behaviors, your dog will continue to behave appropriately.

If you are crate training your puppy, you need to show them that this is where they will sleep. All meals and water bowls should be placed within the crate. They will think of their crate as a happy place.

The rule of thumb with puppy training is to remember: what is eaten will pass. In order to regulate your dog’s toileting habits, you should feed him a good quality food at the same times each day. Doing so allows you to gain a clearer picture of when your puppy might need to relieve himself outdoors.

Always buy a crate that is the correct size for your dog so you can train them well. Keep in mind that puppies get bigger. Select a crate that is large enough for them to fit in when they are older. Generally speaking, your pet should be able to circle, sit and sleep without discomfort.

With any luck, the material you just read has given you a sense of confidence about puppy training. Use these tips and continue learning as you embark on your lifelong journey of discovery with your dog.
