You’ll always remember the day your puppy came home with you. But as the weeks drag on, that excitement can turn into annoyance and frustration. Whenever you’re cleaning up mess after mess, you’ll probably wonder just why you got your dog. However, it’s possible to feel the joy you experienced whenever you first got your dog by training your dog effectively. This article can teach you how to train your dog.
Teach your dog no response is needed for the word ‘no’. You need to look for positive ways to reinforce your commands when you train your dog. When you say ‘no’, your dog isn’t understanding how it should respond to you. There is a difference in all dogs and training should be customized.
Teaching dogs to roll over can be easy, provided some treats are on hand. The first step is a simple “lay” command. Then, position a treat near the floor to one side of him, raise it up and move it over to the opposite side. He will follow the treat by rolling over. Each time he sways to one side, tell him to “roll over”. Keep doing this until the treat is no longer needed. Be patient if they don’t get it right away; they’ll get it soon enough!
Avoid accidents when toilet training your puppy. Pay attention to the cues your dog displays to indicate that he needs to be outside. Some clues to watch for are snuffling, whining and pacing. Don’t delay; bring them outside. Put your dog on a leash and take him where he should go. Whenever your dog uses the restroom outside, reward him or her with lots of praise. In time, the dog will ask when he wants to go outside.
It is important to have a consistent training method when crate training young puppies. When he comes out of the crate, you must immediately allow him to relieve himself in an appropriate place. The dog will grow his bladder so he can hold it for longer and longer this way.
While teaching an old dog a new trick is certainly possible, you’ll want to be wary of any medical and health issues that your dog may have. For instance, if your dog is experiencing arthritis, making it crawl long distances is not very practical. With the right training program, you can inspire your dog to meet his full potential. This is true even for dogs who are more advanced in age. Your first concern needs to be for your pet’s health, though. You don’t want to subject your dog to unnecessary pain or discomfort.
Avoid using edible treats and food as the only means of encouraging or discouraging a specific behavior. For any living creature — dog, human or otherwise — food is sustenance. There are better ways to reward your pet than with food. Tasty treats make awesome rewards, as dogs are often willing to go out of their way to earn them.
Many dogs are terrified of thunderstorms and can become a danger to others or themselves. If your dog has an extreme fear of thunder, speak to your veterinarian. Your vet has access to sedatives that can help in these situations. This is usually a last resort for a dog whose behavior can’t be modified through training to handle the situation.
Dog training is built upon love, patience, and treats. What you’ve just read should go a long way in creating a happy relationship between you and your pooch. You cannot expect to do this overnight. However, if you’re consistent and remain patient, you can create a better relationship between you and your dog.
