Some people give their dogs away because of their bad behavior, but in most cases this can be avoided. A trained dog will be a healthy and happy member of your family. If you can spend some time and follow instructions, you can easily train your dog.

If you want your dog to be agile, find a breed that is naturally this way. Any dog can perform the sport but the popular breeds are border collies, Australian shepherds, labs and sheepdogs.

Patience is imperative when you engage in a training session. This will reduce anger, stress and tension when you train your dog. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.

Do not use shock collars and similar training devices. They don’t often work well and cost more than training methods which are conventional. If you start using these methods, your dog will not be responsive to anything else. These techniques don’t normally work.

Reinforce positive behavior throughout the training process. Punishing your dog whenever he or she does something wrong is not always necessary. Instead, just ensure you aren’t reinforcing bad behavior. By using negative punishment, you may make your dog fear you. Positive reinforcement is the best way to get your dog behaving the way you want.

Commands and corrections should be short and straight to the point. Avoid going on a rant about the dog’s “badness”. Say no and let them know what you would rather have them do. The tone of your voice should let them know you are serious about the command you are making.

Realize an older dog’s limitations. Older dogs won’t be trained perfectly. They’ll always have some quirks that need to be embraced. Keep in mind that adopting an older dog means the chance of getting a dog already set in how they do things. Embrace their not so bad behaviors and focus on retraining their negative behaviors.

Exercise your dog at least an hour everyday in addition to its regular potty breaks outside. Keeping a dog healthy with exercise allows for more efficient training sessions in the future. Keep in mind that a dog that’s been exercised regularly is happier and more responsive to your commands.

Consistency is key to training a dog. Teach them single word commands and be consistent with the words such as sit, stay and speak. You should also have consistency with your tone of voice and positive reinforcement for commands that are obeyed.

Certain dogs fear thunderstorms so much that they can harm themselves. Ask the veterinarian for advice if they have extreme fear towards thunderstorms. Your veterinarian could prescribe you mild sedatives that will calm your dog in these situations. Medication is usually only prescribed when behavioral modification is not enough to address the anxiety, but it does have its place.

When you train your dog, remember to keep sessions short. The ideal time to spend on a task is about fifteen minutes. When you exceed this amount of time, your dog can become frustrated and set your progress back. Following training, be sure to praise your dog liberally and have a nice play session.

Dog training methods differ from dog to dog. If your dog isn’t responding to a treat reward, you will have to find a different reward which will make him work harder. If treats do work, this technique will be applicable in many contexts.

It is absolutely possible to have a happy and well mannered dog. Proper training and showing your dog lots of affection and kindness are important to making this happen. Use the ideas and advice presented within this article, and your dog is going to be a vital member of the family.
