Good Dog Training

Good dog training can be overwhelming. But, if you apply the tips in this piece, you can learn to build a strong relationship with your dog and get a better understanding of his needs.

If you use a leash to train your dog, keep it loose. When dogs are going for a walk, they will often want to check out new territory. Because they are so eager, they often pull on the leash. If you know what you are doing then you will train them to walk on a leash with slack.

“Down” is an important command for dogs to learn. You can use this in emergencies, but also as a stepping stone to many other training skills. The down command can have a dog drop down at any given second, which is great for safety reasons.

Get your dog’s attention the same way every time. Your commands should always begin with your dog’s name. This will get his attention, and then you can tell him what to do. Using your dog’s name lets him know you want his attention.

Choosing the correct crate size is extremely important. You should keep in mind that your dog will get bigger. Choose a crate which will be the right size for the dog when he grows up. The ability to move around within the crate is paramount to the pet’s comfort.

When you’re consistent, he can learn to hold it in. When you are home, take your dog outside hourly. If he goes outside to the toilet, praise him. When he goes inside, don’t punish him. He does not know better, and yelling will just scare him. Your dog should be taken outside when he emerges from his crate, and within 15 minutes of eating or drinking.

If you wish to participate in agility classes, be sure to choose a breed of dog that does well with this sort of activity. A dog can be trained in agility, but there are breeds out there that are naturally more adaptive for it.

Since they are naturally pack animals, dogs want to be led. Some pets might naturally be leaders, but they can learn that you are the leader quickly. It’s critical that you convince your dog that you are the one that is the alpha of your pack. This will make him feel obedient and secure.

Train a  good dog through positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement training focuses on rewarding desired behaviors, not on punishing undesirable behaviors. If you punish your good dog, he may become scared. Positive reinforcement will make your good dog do things when it receives praises and treats.

Dogs have their own personalities and you need to find the ideal training method for your dog. When a dog thinks he’s the boss, he may need some negative reinforcement, while a complacent dog will need positive reinforcement. Whatever your initial approach, be prepared to change your methods if your dog is not responding.

Acclimate your dog to the source that triggers his barking fits. Some dogs bark in response to a specific sound, whereas others become excited in the presence of other people or dogs. Once used to these things, your pet will know that barking is not necessary.

In order to prevent your dog from jumping on you, grab its paws anytime he jumps on you and gently squeeze them to inform them that this isn’t acceptable behavior. This does not hurt the dog if you do it lightly, but it is an uncomfortable feeling for them. After a while, they will stop jumping on people because they will associate it with the uncomfortable feeling.

By reading the above article, you now know what it takes to get your good dog to obey you and become an exceptional one that you can actually enjoy. Give the tips listed in this article a shot. You may find that it is much easier to train your pup.
